Are you open to changing your hosting?
Definitely - I'll go with whatever hosting you recommend
Probably - I'm not really tied down to my current hosting
Probably not - I like my current hosting, but I'd be willing to hear your suggestions
Almost certainly not - I'm very attached to my hosting or have specific constraints requiring us to keep it
Your Current Site's Content
How much of the content do you want to keep?
All of it!
Most of it…
A bit of it
None of it!
Care to elaborate?
What are the most important areas of your site? Is there anything specific you want to draw our attention to that we might miss on our own? Links are very helpful here.
How's the organization of your current site?
Pretty good - I mostly want to keep it, perhaps with minor changes
Could use work - let's reorganize!
What (if anything) does your current site not have that you want on your new one?
Global Areas/Content
Just about every site features some global areas that are shown on just about every page. Don't worry too much about the layout when answering these questions; we'll just use this as a jumping-off point to build whatever will be the best fit for your site.
The Header
Most sites have a consistent 'header' area at the top of each screen. The main purpose of this area is to identify you (usually using your logo) and to house the primary navigation of the site.
Header Message Area
Somewhere around mid-March through early April, 2020, we received a lot of requests from our clients to add a prominent place to their site to display an important message to their visitors. Who would've thought everyone would have the same request at once.
Since then, we've decided to usually include a basic area for a short message on most sites, just in case. Some clients, however, have use for more robust header message functionality.
How often do you plan on using a header message area?
Rarely - only when I have an important announcement
Sometimes - we'll have messages running for a few weeks now and again, but less than half the time
Often - there's usually something we want to notify visitors about
Always - we'll always have something worth talking about!
Are you interested in any of the following advanced message features?
Closeable - I want there to be a place for the user to close the current message so it no longer appears on other pages
Complex layout - I want to be able to display more than just a brief bit of text (hint: you'll want 'closeable' as well)
Multiple messages - I want to be able to rotate through a few messages at once
Other Header Items
The header also sometimes houses a limited number of other high-priority elements. Please note anything you feel is worth including here, but be careful what you wish for. This area is pretty prominent, so we only want to put things here we'd rather have people interacting with than interacting with our page itself.
Besides your logo, main menu, and potential message(s), is there anything else you think is worth including in the header area?
Social links
Email
Phone
Address
Search
Other
What else do you want in the header?
The Footer
A pattern we employ on many of our sites is to include a call to action or CTA (basically a flashy area trying to get the user to do something we want them to do) in the footer area.
This area is optional; we tend to think it's a good idea for most, but not all clients.
What kind of footer CTA do you want?
Contact form - I want to direct people to a form, or a page with a form on it
Multiple forms - same deal, but there are a couple of forms that are equally important
Newsletter signup - I want to build a following with my newsletter
The footer is a good place to store information that is useful to only a small proportion of your users. Most people browsing the internet know to look to the footer for something they can't find in the main menu, and for certain things (like privacy policies and careers pages), they often check the footer first.
The only content we assume will be in the footer on all sites are the 'fine print' details like copyright, privacy policy, and website credits.
Besides those, what of the following do you want to include in the footer?
Additional menu(s)
Social links
Address
Map
Email
Phone
Brief 'about' description
Link to contact page
Newsletter signup
What items do you want in those menus?
Anything else you want in the footer?
Main Sections & Features
Does your site need any of these common content areas and/or features? Check all that apply.
Blog (basic archives and posts - we'll have more questions later)
Newsletter signup (integrating with Mailchimp, Constant Contact, or similar)
Complex forms (something like what you're filling out)
Team (i.e. a list with individual names/images/bios/etc. for each member)
Portfolio (with individual pages for each project)
Logos (for customers, donors, accreditations, etc.)
Custom post types (any structured data with many entries: recipes, reviews, activities, etc.)
Events (any feed of individual events, sorted soonest first, that disappear automatically once they conclude)
Classes (either events that occur on a consistent schedule, or courses made up of multiple different events)
Interactive maps (leave blank if a nice image of your general location is fine)
Locked-down areas (password-protected or only accessible to specific users)
Shop (selling one or multiple products)
Payment form (donations or other payments that aren't really 'selling' 'products')
Global Search (something robust that can search throughout the entire site)
Old browser support (by default, we support Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge)
Anything you want to elaborate on? Is there anything else uncommon your site needs that we ought to know about?

How frequently do you have events?
Just a handful each year

Simple - I don't have many events, so a basic feed displaying the quickest approaching events will be fine
Complex - I have enough events that I'll need a calendar view, if not multiple options
Ultra - events are a major part of my site, so I might need filtering or other advanced functionality
How much detail will you want to include on most events? (We're assuming each event will have a title and date.)
Time
Location
Short description
Long, detailed description
